General Motors says the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD will offer a new 8.3-liter Duramax turbo-diesel V8 rated at 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque. The 2027 heavy-duty pickups also bring revised steering, electronic brake-boost and trailering updates, with properly equipped configurations rated for up to 38,000 pounds of gooseneck towing.
The announcement, dated September 24, 2026, gives truck buyers their first official specifications for GM’s new heavy-duty diesel. The 2027 Silverado HD Duramax is the headline, but GM is positioning the update as a coordinated truck package: engine, Allison 10-speed transmission, steering, brakes and drive modes are intended to work together under load. Prices and full configuration details remain unannounced.
Editorial note: Prepared for SAEC’s Pickup & Truck News desk. Specifications and availability in this report are attributed to GM’s September 24, 2026 announcement; independent test results and final pricing were not available at the time of writing. This is a news summary, not an independent vehicle test. Last checked October 10, 2026.

GM’s September announcement introduces an available 8.3L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 for the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD. The company rates it at 555 hp and 1,230 lb-ft, calling those figures best-in-class for diesel horsepower and torque in the heavy-duty segment based on its latest available competitive information. GM says the engine was designed, developed and will be manufactured in-house for heavy-duty pickup use.
The 2027 Silverado HD Duramax is paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. GM also cites a fully forged crankshaft, connecting rods and steel pistons, plus updated cooling and turbocharging systems designed for sustained towing. Those are manufacturer claims; independent instrumented tests have not yet established how the new truck performs against competitors in real-world towing.
GM has also updated the standard 6.6L gasoline V8. The company lists 412 hp and 472 lb-ft for the revised gas engine, so the truck lineup is not diesel-only news. Buyers comparing the two powertrains will need to weigh their expected trailer weight, annual mileage, fuel costs and payload needs once full specifications and pricing are released.
GM lists maximum available trailering of up to 20,000 lb with a conventional hitch and up to 38,000 lb with a gooseneck on properly equipped configurations. The announcement also cites a maximum gross combination weight rating of 46,500 lb. These are maximum ratings, not a promise that every 2500 or 3500 model can tow those loads.
Cab, bed, axle, drivetrain, hitch, payload and equipment choices affect the rating of an individual truck. Before towing, owners should use the final door-jamb payload label, owner’s manual and configuration-specific trailering guide—not just a headline maximum—to check the truck, trailer and hitch combination.
That distinction matters for the 2027 Silverado HD Duramax because a high engine torque figure does not by itself determine safe towing capacity. Braking, tires, axle ratings, hitch limits and payload all remain part of the system. GM says its revised chassis and control systems are intended to improve confidence under load, but customer-facing ratings for each build are still pending.
The 2027 HD trucks move to rack-and-pinion electric power steering, replacing the previous hydraulic-assisted steering arrangement. GM says the new system has approximately 30% more steering output than the current HD hydraulic gear and is tuned to reduce kickback and improve steering feel. Those descriptions come from GM and need road testing to evaluate independently.
GM also introduces an electronic brake-boost system on the heavy-duty pickups, with larger 14.6-inch front rotors and four-piston front calipers. The company says the hardware is designed to provide more consistent stopping performance and better thermal capacity when hauling heavy loads. An available camera package can provide up to 14 views, while trailer tire-pressure and temperature monitoring and Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert are among the listed trailering aids.
For ZR2 and AT4X versions, GM describes a new available Terrain Mode with one-pedal off-road control in 4HI and 4LO. GM says lifting off the accelerator applies braking to help manage steep grades and technical obstacles. Availability by trim and package should be checked against the final order guide.

GM expects the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD to begin arriving at Canadian dealers in late 2026. Its September 24 release says pricing and additional product information will follow. It does not establish final U.S. pricing, exact launch dates for every market, or every model’s engine and towing configuration.
The 2027 Silverado HD Duramax specifications are therefore a strong first look, not a complete buying guide. Shoppers should wait for the official order guide, window stickers and market-specific towing charts before comparing final prices or placing an order. The same applies to payload: the maximum advertised trailering rating does not tell an owner how much cargo, passengers and hitch weight a specific truck can carry.
More towing capacity does not change the basic job of a work light: it illuminates a nearby task area, such as a hitch, trailer connection, cargo bed or worksite. It is different from a forward-facing driving light intended to extend visibility on a dark road, and it should not be used as an uncovered road lamp where local rules prohibit it.
For close-range scene lighting, SAEC’s LED work lights for trucks and equipment include compact flood options. The Black Pearls 2×3 Heavy-Duty LED Work Light is rated at 30W, 2,838 raw lumens and 9–36V input; its flood beam and 61 m listed beam distance are product specifications, not a claim that it replaces a vehicle’s road lighting. Mounting position, wiring, aiming and applicable vehicle regulations still matter.
For front-facing auxiliary illumination on trails, see SAEC’s guide to LED light bars versus driving lights. The right category depends on whether the need is forward distance, trail-edge spread or a stationary work area.
GM rates the available 8.3L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 at 555 hp and 1,230 lb-ft in the 2027 Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD.
GM lists up to 20,000 lb conventional and 38,000 lb gooseneck trailering for properly equipped models. The maximum does not apply to every configuration; use the final rating for the exact truck and trailer.
GM expects Canadian dealer arrivals in late 2026. The September 24 announcement did not include pricing, and timing can vary by market.
If a heavy-duty pickup will also serve as a night-time work vehicle, compare SAEC’s LED work-light category with the specific mounting and electrical needs of the truck. For road or trail illumination, choose a separate auxiliary-light setup that matches the route and local lighting rules.
